Fantastic wine from Couronneau. Merlot-dominated, this Bordeaux has been made with ‘easy-drinking’ very much in mind. They’d probably kill us for saying so, but it’s got some of that New World ripeness that makes wines from countries like Chile so popular. Ripe, soft Merlot fruits dominate.
This winery was founded in the 1950s and sold wine in bulk to local wine merchants. When the Descombes took over, in 2017, everything changed. They switched its sights to quality, not quantity – focusing on the environmental conservation of their coveted Burgundy plots. They've even gone as far to plant hedges and trees and use natural fertilisers in the vineyards. This is their Petit Chablis, and it has all the classic flavours you'd expect: lemon and grapefruit, and a textbook lick of minerality.
"Fragrant and enjoyable, this offers aromas of ripe berry, Mediterranean herb, pressed violet and a whiff of pine forest. On the round easygoing palate, savory notes of brown cooking spice accent a core of red cherry and black raspberry. Enjoy through 2017." - 88/100, Wine Enthusiast
This must be our favourite new label! Rebo (see the number plate) is the local indigenous grape variety, and delivers bags of character in this nicely oaked, complex red that shows deep blackberry fruits and more. * colour of car on label varies
